United States Senator Chuck Schumer has requested funding from the federal government to be put toward the cleaning of the Long Island Sound. This is not the first time efforts have been made clean up the Sound. In the past, requests were made to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to which they responded by agreeing to provide funding but then failed to follow through. While plans were set in motion, the final step is funding, which reportedly has been the biggest challenge to attain.
The inexorable delays have been exhausting for all parties, especially considering the potential for big business if the Sound were to finally be cleaned. But now it seems those frustrations will finally be met. In addition to Senator Schumer’s request for $10 million to clean the Sound, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is now asking that some $860 million be put toward research on how to better conserve it.
Further research would hopefully lead to stricter regulations on pollution. The hope is to eventually develop a means of testing nitrogen levels. Nitrogen is essential to the survival and reproduction of animals and plants, provided that it remains within certain parameters. But with the mass amounts of goods that are transported to other states in ships, along with the alarming amount of waste water dumping, the Sound now has far too much nitrogen, effectively disrupting the local ecosystem.
Over the years, joint efforts by the government and EPA has led to the reduction of some 40 million pounds of yearly nitrogen discharge. But the job doesn’t stop there, as these efforts have proven not to be sufficient. Further efforts must be made in order to eventually make the Sound a safer place for recreational use and to return the local ecosystem to health. And while much of this comes from federal funding, it must also come from you.
