Do I need Septic Tank Additives?

Septic tanks have many advantages; they’re environmentally friendly, economical, and low maintenance.  They can even last 20 to 30 years, but of course it depends on how well you maintain your tank.  Although septic tanks are very low maintenance, there are a couple of things that you can do to make it last as long as possible.  One of the ways that people recommend doing so is by putting additives in their septic tank.  (Related topics: Poughkeepsie NY septic tank pumping, Poughkeepsie NY septic tank cleaning, Poughkeepsie NY septic tank repairs)

These additives are a combination of enzymes and bacteria to enhance the existing biota in the septic tank.  The purpose of this is to break down solid waste in the tank.  Some people even say you should flush dry yeast down your toilet once a month.  There are a lot of companies that sell these additives, so it must be necessary, right?

False.  Putting additives in your septic tank can actually harm it!  To understand why they’re harmful, you need to understand how a septic tank functions.  First, the waste separates into 3 layers: solids, effluent, and scum.  The natural occurring bacteria and enzymes in your septic tank then helps the tank to not overflow by breaking down the solid waste.  This is because the enzymes break down the scum, while the bacteria works on the sludge.  When they’re broken down, they’re able to travel through the pipes to be treated in the drain field.

The bacteria in your septic tanks don’t need any help doing their job.  Additionally, the additives could actually kill the bacteria, doing the opposite of what you intended.  So, before you believe that putting additives in your septic tank is a good idea, think of this article.
