My Concrete Septic Tank Has A Crack

One of the biggest draws to getting a septic tank is that they’re durable, meaning they usually have a long lifespan.  Although they have low maintenance, they do need to be maintained.  If not, they probably won’t last as long as you’d like them to.  The great thing about the maintenance is that you should only need to get Poughkeepsie NY septic tank pumping every couple of years.  Aside from that, there isn’t too much that you should have to worry about.  That being said, one of the things that could happen to your concrete septic tank is that it gets a crack.

There are numerous reasons why this could happen, which include vehicles driving over the top of the tank, deterioration of the concrete, ground water pressure, or even tree roots.  Some of the signs that your tank has a crack is that there’s a foul odor, lush vegetation, standing water, or toilet or sink backups in your home.  If you notice these signs, you shouldn’t automatically assume that your tank has a crack, as these are also the signs that your tank is overflowing.  To be sure, we can inspect your tank and identify the root of the problem.

If your tank is overflowing, you’ll just need to get Poughkeepsie NY septic tank pumping.  If we discover that it’s a crack, however, you’ll need to get your tank repaired.  If the crack is severe and located in a complicated area, unfortunately, the tank may have to be replaced.  Most of the time, however, the crack can be repaired.  To repair your concrete tank, we’ll first have to drain the tank and clean the crack completely of dirt and debris.  We’ll then brush a layer of a concrete bonding agent into and around the crack.  The next step is to press hydraulic cement into the crack.  Once it dries, your septic tank will be ready to use again.

It’s important to note that most concrete septic tanks will develop cracks over time, and most of the time they won’t need to be repaired.  When they start leaking, however, it can be dangerous to the environment so it’s important to get it fixed.  If you need an inspection or repair, call us at Jones Septic Services.
