Advanced Septic Systems Can Reduce the Levels of Nitrogen in Water

Prevention is key if you want to keep your household and your family healthy. Everything you consume, the environment around you and even the quality of the air you breathe can have a significant impact on your life and your health. That’s why advanced septic systems are all the rage, and even though they might represent higher expenses, the positive impact on your health and the environment should be enough to justify it.

These septic systems use a septic tank plus layers of sand and wood chips. They were developed at Stony Brook University’s Center for Clean Water Technology and were specifically designed to reduce nitrogen in wastewater.

The advanced system is better than a sewage treatment plant. Whilst almost 75 percent of the people with septic systems use systems or cesspools, the experts agree that causes high nitrogen levels that feed algal blooms, harm clam stock and degrade wetlands, which is why reducing nitrogen pollution is a priority for many people.

The clean water center, founded in 2015, is in charge of researching ways to reduce nitrogen in wastewater, as well as focusing on treating unregulated chemicals in drinking water.

This nitrogen-reducing tech used a biofilter to accomplish its goal, which for the Centre of Clean Water is to reduce nitrogen to 10 milligrams per liter, to cost less than $10,000 and last for 30 years.

The systems have already been installed on a municipal level at county parks in Suffolk, but the goal is to bring them to the domestic arena as soon as possible.

Experts from the center took sand and wood chips from Long Island to a facility in Massachusetts for testing. With about 18 months of data, the systems were shown to remove nitrogen to less than 10 milligrams per liter. They also remove emerging contaminants such as prescription drugs and care products by at least 90 percent.
